Graphic Score is the representation of music through the use of visual symbols outside the realm of traditional music notation. Graphic notation evolved in the 1950s, and it is often used in combination with traditional music notation. Composers often rely on graphic notation in experimental music, where standard musical notation can be ineffective.

Sonic Wire Sculpture

Sonic Wire Sculptor is based on a musical instrument by Amit Pitaru which has been shown in museums and galleries world wide. A great effort has been placed in reworking the app to take advantage of the the iPhone's unique audio and input capabilities.

The Sonic Wire Sculptor turns your 3D drawing into sound. It introduces a simple yet deep connection between visual and audio composition.

I like when the pitch changes along the line. The sound is repeating in a higher circular motion.

Scores can blend conventional elements notation with the unconventional. The performer has to use the pictures to inspire his or her performance - it's more like a guide, or a musical map.

Schorn - Nebula

Composer Brian Schorn is as much a visual artist and graphic designer as he is an expert in eletroacoustic music - that is, music using electronic sounds. Nebula is written for three instruments, with each player taking inspiration from one of the three interlinked dark clouds.

There are different amounts of colour and spread out. I think in a darker cloud means high voice. In the picture visualize the use of music from the electronic instrument.

I choose the objects that sounded close to my music record and make it move along the rhythm. I also choose a dark red colour as a background because when I listen to the music that I made, it feels like a thriller story.

Cornelius Cardew's Treatise

This video is different from other graphic score, it uses the body and movements to translate the sound. The movement of the body represent different sounds. I think it's very interesting video to see body movement can be used to convey the emotions and feelings of the sounds.

This video is the most interesting graphic score. The designer is using simple graphics. When the music starts, there are only a few elements but when the music gets heavier the composition and element changes. It makes the video not boring and lively, even with just black and white.

After I saw catoons and noticed the movement of the character with the sound. I use that as a starting point to applied with my animation.
